SpyHunter vs Malwarebytes: An in-depth comparison

Malwarebytes is a great product, and I personally use it, but it has never been my first choice when it comes to anti-malware software. That’s because, for years, SpyHunter has been my top choice. SpyHunter is probably the only software that offers a free version, and even then, with a catch: the free version is limited to only 5 scans per day. And even if you pay for the full version, it’s only $40. That’s cheap!

SpyHunter has received a lot of attention since its launch last year. Why? Because it’s a free, 100% effective malware removal tool that doesn’t require any technical knowledge to use. It goes without saying that SpyHunter makes for a great antivirus tool. However, while SpyHunter is a great all-rounder, it does have some flaws that Malwarebytes Antivirus does not.

SpyHunter vs Malwarebytes, which one is better to use?

Brief introduction

What is SpyHunter?

SpyHunter is a malware removal tool for Windows and Mac. The program can detect all types of malware, including ransomware, keyloggers, trojans, viruses, spyware, rootkits and more.

The program has a simple and user-friendly interface, so even inexperienced users will have no problems with its operation.

What is Malwarebytes?

Malwarebytes is a well-known malware removal software, first released in 2006. The program can detect almost all types of malware and safely remove them from your PC.

Malwarebytes has evolved over the years and now has a real-time scanning feature, so it works as antivirus software and not just as a malware removal tool.

In terms of availability, the software is available for both Windows and Mac platforms.

Interface and user-friendliness

SpyHunter: Simple, but sometimes clumsy.

SpyHunter offers a simple and user-friendly interface, and you can access all important functions directly from the toolbar.

While the interface itself is simple, we find it a bit dated, but that’s just a personal preference and not a deciding factor for us.

We had some problems with the interface and didn’t like the way the reports were organized. All reports are in tree form, which makes them difficult to read, and we hope this will be changed in the near future.

The interface for the scheduling function also leaves something to be desired, and we wish there was an option to select the type of analysis you want to perform.

These are some minor interface issues that will hopefully be fixed in the near future.

⇒ Install SpyHunter

Malwarebytes: Simple and friendly user interface, with some minor flaws.

Malwarebytes’ user interface is simple, uncluttered and has large icons that allow you to easily access all the features you need.

All your notifications are available in the right pane, so you can easily see the latest detections, alerts and blocked threats.

Despite the simplicity of the interface, the application has a few elements that we didn’t like. Most importantly, a reminder is displayed during the analysis to invite you to upgrade to the Premium version.

This is not a deciding factor for us, but some users may not like it. Overall, the interface is simple and easy to use and you won’t have any problems with it.

Overview of functions

SpyHunter: Simple but powerful malware removal tool

SpyHunter has a simple, user-friendly interface and you can perform a system scan with a single click.

According to the developers, the software can detect malware, viruses, spyware, ransomware, keyloggers, Trojans, rootkits, adware, unwanted programs and vulnerabilities.

In addition to the quick search function, the program also has a custom search function that allows you to select the players you want to analyze.

With the custom scan, you can choose to scan for privacy issues, security vulnerabilities, and rootkits. You can also choose to scan the memory and the registry.

The program can also protect the hosts file and system files. As for network security, there is DNS and proxy protection.

SpyHunter also has a scheduling feature that allows you to schedule scans, and the reporting feature lets you easily view all previous scans and their results.

We should also mention that SpyHunter has a System Guard feature that provides real-time protection, but unfortunately this feature is only available in the full version of the program.

The free version also has an unusual limitation: detected threats can only be removed once every 48 hours. This is really a questionable decision.

Malwarebytes: Advanced malware removal software

Malwarebytes’ greatest strength is its malware removal feature. The program is capable of detecting and removing any type of malware with ease.

The program is incredibly easy to use, and you can perform a quick analysis in just a few clicks. A custom scan function is available that allows you to select the stations you want to scan.

Run a system check for errors

Press Start Scan to check for Windows problems.

Press Repair Everything to troubleshoot proprietary technology.

Run a PC scan with Restoro Repair Tool to find errors that cause security problems and slowdowns. Once the scan is complete, the recovery process replaces the damaged files with new Windows files and components.

You can also choose to scan memory objects, boot objects, rootkits and archives. This feature also allows you to choose how detected threats should be handled.

This allows you to automatically quarantine all threats, ignore them, or select the desired action for each threat.

Comprehensive reports are also available, allowing you to view a detailed list of all detected objects. Of course, there is a whitelist feature and you can easily add files, folders, applications and websites.

The program also provides real-time protection in the form of web security, protection against malware and PUPs, protection against ransomware and protection against exploits.

Each of these components can be disabled so you don’t have to use them if you don’t want to. Unfortunately, all real-time protection options are only available in the premium version of Malwarebytes.

Another feature exclusive to the Premium version is scheduled scanning, which means you have to run each scan manually on your computer.

While the premium version offers full real-time protection, the free version is able to tackle all malware threats.

Final thoughts

SpyHunter: Simplicity with a few drawbacks

SpyHunter is an incredibly simple yet powerful malware removal software that should help you get rid of any type of malware easily.

The program also offers unique features like host protection, proxy and DNS that are definitely useful.

Real-time protection is not available in the free version, but in our tests SpyHunter did not interfere with Windows Defender, so you can use it without any problems.

The user interface was our biggest complaint. While we didn’t mind the old-fashioned interface, we didn’t like the way the reporting feature worked.

This area seems cluttered with information, which can be a problem, especially if dozens of threats have been detected on your PC.

This is not a critical factor, but it needs to be refined. The program also had a somewhat dubious history, and SpyHunter was often reported as a potentially unwanted application.

We should also mention that the free version has a 48-hour wait time for malware removal, which can be a problem if you need to remove malware from your PC urgently.

Although SpyHunter did a good job, you should consider its dubious history and the unusual limitations of the free version before using it.

A Questionable Past

The free version allows you to remove malware once every 48 hours.

Malwarebytes: One of the best programs to remove malware

Malwarebytes offers a user-friendly interface that allows you to scan for malware in seconds.

The free version can handle all types of malware, but unfortunately real-time analysis and planning are only available in the premium version.

This is not a big problem since you can use Malwarebytes and Windows Defender side by side without any problems. Some users don’t like the constant demand to upgrade to the premium version, but we didn’t find it too annoying.

Simple User Interface

Ability to remove all types of malware

Can work with Windows Defender

Unlimited manual scanning in the free version

Free premium trial

Some features are only available in the Premium version

Both applications are capable of tackling malware, but given SpyHunter’s history and the limitations of the free version, we think Malwarebytes is a much better choice.
